    Description of the needs

The biggest challenge for the world to transition to carbon free electricity is to ensure there is clean electricity available 24/7, each day of the year. With its consistent and complementary production profile, wave energy helps plug the voids of wind and solar and brings stability to a future powered entirely by renewables. By taking on this critical role of providing stability, one that oil, gas and coal have played in the past, wave energy can make a major contribution to address climate change – and to help end our dependency on fossil fuels.

    Description of the solution

Wave energy enables carbon free system that balance to supply to demand at all times while requiring less generation capacity, less storage and less grid capacity. Balancing the system already at the stage of generation lowers the total cost of zero carbon electricity. Waves on the large oceans are fetched over long distances, over multiple days from various weather systems, giving it a very consistent power flow, making it an excellent complement to stabilise the clean energy mix.

Supplying a more stable mix of renewable electricity can significantly improve the business case of green hydrogen. By reducing the variability, wave energy can enable electrolyze facilities to run at higher load factors, while requiring less generation capacity and less grid to power them. It can also reduce the H2 storage capacity required to keep continuous down-stream production.

Wave Energy presents a major industrial opportunity, offering long term economic development in coastal regions around the world. The modular wave farm concept, using many relatively small units deployed in clusters enables local supply chains to deliver a high portion of the economic value through the development, manufacturing, installation and operation of wave farms.

    Description of the effect

CorPacks are used as building blocks that are laid out side-by-side to form larger wave farms that can be hundreds of megawatts to gigawatt scale. The electricity from each CorPack is exported through a collection hub, that makes it plug-and-play with offshore wind.

    CorPack consists of:

    • Wave Energy Converters

    • Mooring system

    • Anchors

    • Electrical collection system

    • Remote control and communication

    Company/companies that developed/implemented/offer the innovation

CorPower Oceans is a leader in wave power technology for a sustainable world. The company is a turnkey supplier of wave energy systems, enabling their customers to generate clean electricity from ocean waves. CorPower Ocean has developed a compact high-efficiency Wave Energy Converter, inspired by the pumping principles of the human heart. Using phase control technology the Wave Energy Converters operate in resonance with the waves, giving 5 times more energy per ton compared to the previous state-of-the-art.
